Business Development Manager – Automation

Reports to:              GM- Industrial Markets

Department:            Marketing and Sales / Automation

Job Function:

This position will provide product and application expertise to external and internal customers. The BDM – Automation is responsible for establishing the direction for product, capabilities and sales growth within the automation sector.

Essential duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy & Business Management: Responsible to build and manage growth strategy for this segment of Bison’s business. This includes being responsible for the P&L (Price & Margin), developing and managing the sales funnel, including new target customers, identifying product needs and creating Product Plans as needed.

Technical Expert: Must be highly technical and comfortable with mechanical, electrical and mechatronics products. Will be responsible for Bison’s automation offering, taking lead on all electrical and system’s needs. Must be familiar with gear reducers, AC, DC, BLDC & Servo motors, motor controls, HMI, EtherCAT, EtherNet\IP, ProfiNET, ProfiBUS and other communications protocols, PLC controls and programming.

Product Management: Help to identify potential suppliers/ partners and will liaise with suppliers as needed for design assistance and/ or to spec new products needed. Identify product cost improvements ideas for assigned product line(s). Responsible to develop standard offering of “plug ‘n play” systems. Be responsible to understand the “competitive landscape” through competitive reviews, teardowns, etc. Responsible for pricing while ensuring margin objectives are met per corporate pricing policy.

Market Expert: Responsible to know and understand machine designer needs. Collaborate with sales team to get input regarding competitor product lines and pricing. Understand the competitive landscape and assess competitors’ relative positions.

Customer Support: Will be able to work with customers to recommend standard and/ or to design a new package of products, including complete systems, to meet overall customer requirements. Will be able to provide support in terms of design and integration with other customer components. Combination Applications Engineer and Product/ Systems Engineer.

Sales Support: Provide product selection/ application support to sales team. Must be able to interact on a commercial level. Ability to interact with customers directly or in conjunction with the sales team. High level of commercial aptitude to go along with technical expertise

Sales Training: Provide product & systems training to Bison sales team and customers. Effectively interface across all levels of the organization within Bison. Be comfortable interacting with all levels at customers.


Travel Requirements: Must be able and willing to travel as needed to accomplish the duties and responsibilities. Expected travel up to 25% of time.

Supervisory Responsibilities: 1 Direct Report, Automation Specialist. Lead, coach and groom team members and direct report for increased responsibility. Lead an innovative, customer focused and continuous improvement culture.

Education and Experience:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering
  • 5+ Years’ experience working as an Automation Specialist, or equivalent, in the power transmission/ automation sectors.
  • Experience working with product marketing, marketing analysis and/ or sales teams is a plus.
  • Experience leading and developing direct reports

Required Skills:

  • PC experience including Microsoft Office products. CRM software experience is also a plus.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Be a self-starter and follow through on projects.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in short time frames.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of customers, suppliers and associates across all levels of the organization.
